August Meeting - New Location

The August NJUG meeting will be held on 8/26 at 6 pm at a new location. The

This month’s speaker is Raghavan “Rags” Srinivas of Sun MIcrosystems, and
below is a summary of his topic and bio.
*JavaFX and Java SE 6 Update 10: A new Desktop Experience*
Java SE is on over 90% of desktops and Java ME is on over 90% of mobile
phones. Java is also making a big dent in the consumer space such as set
top boxes, Blu-Ray Disc players and so on. Although Java client
technology is ubiquitous, consumer applications are not because
development and deployment for consumers is still too hard. Rich
Applications has achieved a new degree of sophistication
with requirements to add multimedia and animation.
With the introduction of the new JavaFX SDK and Java SE 6
update N, it is possible to incorporate the newer elements
of a very rich client application into new and existing
Java applications. The talk will explore the features of the
language followed by features that are being explored to create
leaner and meaner JRE that eases deployment and installation. The
features that are being looked into will ease start-up time, provide a quick
launch and on-demand installation, among other things. The talk
will explore the Java Kernel and other features that ease applet and
application instantiation and deployment. We will also look at features that
enable building richer client applications with Java SE 6 Update 10.
After attending this session attendees should be able to walk away with a
good
understanding of where the JavaFX and Java SE platform is headed and how
this should ease their development and deployment concerns for consumer
applications.
*About Raghavan:*
Raghavan “Rags” Srinivas is the CTO of Technology Evangelism at Sun
Microsystems looking at new technology directions and trends. His general
focus area is in distributed systems, with a specialization in
interoperability, mobility and security. He has spoken on a variety of
technical topics at conferences around the world and teaches graduate
classes in the evening. He publishes a standards column and has represented
Sun at a number of standards bodies. He also serves in the organizing
committee for several industry-wide technical conferences.
Rags brings with him about 20 years of software development and about 7
years of technology evangelism experience. He worked for Digital Equipment
Corporation before joining Sun. He has worked on several technology areas,
including internals of VMS, Unix and NT. He has evangelized a number of
technology areas including the early releases of Java, Java EE, Java and
XML, Java ME, AJAX and Web 2.0 and so on.
Rags holds a Masters degree in Computer Science from the Center of Advanced
Computer Studies at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
He enjoys running, hiking and eating, especially spicy food.

March Meeting

Maven’s Objectives
Maven’s primary goal is to allow a developer to comprehend the complete
state of a development effort in the shortest period of time. In order to
attain this goal there are several areas of concern that Maven attempts to
deal with:
- Making the build process easy
- Providing a uniform build system
- Providing quality project information
- Providing guidelines for best practices development
- Allowing transparent migration to new features

Januray Meeting

This months speaker is a fellow JUG member, and a stong supporter of object oriented principles - Mr. Steve Nyemba. The topic of the discussion is Javascript.
- Object Oriented Javascript. - JavaScript is an excellent language to write object oriented web applications. It can support OOP because it supports inheritance through prototyping as well as properties and methods. It instantly gives you power; you can write code that can be re-used and that is encapsulated.
- Namespacing javascript, Embedding HTML into another using javascript.
- Last but not least, JSUnit - The Unit Testing framework for JavaScript.

December Meeting

This months speaker is Java evangelist Carol McDonald from Sun Microsystems. Carol has been traveling across the globe speaking at Sun Tech days, with a final 2007 speaking engagement at the Nashville Java Users group. This is a meeting you don’t want to miss!
The topic of the discussion is, “Comparing a Sample Application built using Java EE, Spring and Seam”. Examining a sample Application built 3 different ways:
- with JavaServer Faces, EJB 3.0 and the Java Persistence API,
- Spring 2.0, JPA, and JSF
- JBoss Seam
This talk will explain the implementation of a sample Online Catalog Application using JavaServer Faces, EJB 3.0 and the Java Persistence API. Then we will discuss the same application implemented using Spring 2.0, JPA, and JSF, and Finally we will look at the same application using Seam.

Topic: Taking Advantage of Web Scale Computing with Amazons Elastic Computing Cloud (EC2)
Presenter: Gregg Boyle
Overview: On demand computing power for literally pennies per hour is now a reality for any developer or entrepreneur with a great idea and a little bit of time. We will walk through what it takes to stand up a server, and deploy an application in just minutes. The possibilities are endless for what this solution can enable for any entrepreneur or person with a great idea but but not a lot of money to get off the ground with a project. And of course, we will be doing all of this with a command line toolkit built in java! 
BTW, IBM announced today that it is also putting a cloud computing solution into the market. Lookout Software as a Service, here comes Hardware as a Service!
Here is a summary of the EC2 service:
Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) is exposed via a set of web api’s that provides resizable compute capacity in the cloud. It is designed to make web-scale computing easier for developers. Amazon EC2’s simple web service interface allows you to obtain and configure capacity with minimal friction. It provides you with complete control of your computing resources and lets you run on Amazon’s proven computing environment. Amazon EC2 reduces the time required to obtain and boot new server instances to minutes, allowing you to quickly scale capacity, both up and down, as your computing requirements change. Amazon EC2 changes the economics of computing by allowing you to pay only for capacity that you actually use. Service Highlights
Elastic
Amazon EC2 enables you to increase or decrease capacity within minutes, not hours or days. You can commission one, hundreds or even thousands of server instances simultaneously.
Completely Controlled
You have complete control of your instances. You have root access to each one, and you can interact with them as you would any machine.

As a software developer for over 15 yrs , Carol’s experience has been in the technology areas of distributed network applications and protocols, including Java EE technology, XML, Internet/Intranet applications, LDAP, Distributed Network Management (CMIP,SNMP) and Email (X.400,X.500). Before joining Sun Carol worked on a Car Loan Servicing application for Toyota, Pharmaceutical Intranet applications for Roche in Switzerland, a Telecom Network Management Application for Digital (now HP) in France, a X.400 Email Server for IBM in Germany, and as a student intern for the National Security Agency. Carol holds a M.S. in Computer Science from the University of Tennessee, a B.S. in Geology from Vanderbilt University, and is a Sun Certified Java Architect and Java Language Programmer. Carol is also Fluent
in French and German.
Carol is currently traveling across the globe speaking at Sun Tech days in Asia, with a final 2007 speaking engagement at the Nashville Java Users group. September Meeting

Hello all,
This is a reminder for the upcoming NJUG meeting for September 2007. It will be held at 6pm, Tuesday the 18th at Emdeon Corporation.

This time we are not having any presentation. We had lots in the past months. However, we are going to utilize this time to discuss the support for this user group.
We will have an open discussion of the tasks such as finding sponsers, managing presenters, organizing presentation archives website maintenance, JUG advertisements etc.
Let us all together, make this a better organization.
